Welcome to Zinc Information

Zinc - Why Do We Need It?

Zinc is an essential mineral. Every cell in the body needs this nutrient. It fuels the activity of approximately a hundred of different enzymes that support biochemical reactions in the body.

How zinc benefits the body:

- It promotes health, growth and development during pregnancy, childhood, and adolescence. Sufficient amount of zinc intake is important during pregnancy to ensure normal growth and development of the fetus. It is also important for the growth and development of children;

- It helps keep the immune system healthy by building the resistance capacity of the body to fight against common infections and some chronic diseases that are linked to the improper functioning of the immune system, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or fibromyalgia;

- It has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory functions;

- It ensures timely wound healing;

- It helps maintain the sense of taste and smell;

- It provides the support for DNA synthesis;

- It's important for maintaining a healthy skin.

Zinc deficiency would normally occur for the following reasons:

- Its intake has been insufficient;

- It is inadequately absorbed;

- There has been an increased depletion of zinc from the body;

- There is an increased need for the zinc.

Nicotine-addicts usually have the risk of depletion/deficiency of important nutrients and minerals including zinc.

Some of the signs of zinc deficiency include - diarrhea, hair loss, delayed healing of wounds, loss of appetite, taste abnormalities, weight loss and mental lethargy.

Some food sources of zinc are oysters, ginger root, lamb, pecans, green peas, shrimp, whole wheat, rye and almonds.

As with any other mineral, excess of zinc can be harmful to the body. Hair Mineral Analysis as well as Symtomatology analysis can help determine vitamins and minerals imbalances in the body.
