China bans new lead, zinc projects in big and midsize cities
China has set access requirements on lead and zinc production, according to the State Development and Reform Commission (SDRC).
The country will not permit the launching of new lead and zinc smelting projects within one kilometre of suburbs of big and midsize cities and residential areas, holiday resorts, hospitals, and food and pharmaceutical enterprises which demand certain environmental conditions.
* SDRC has asked local governments at various levels to choose sites for lead and zinc smelting plants in a rational way.
* New lead and zinc smelting projects are not allowed to be launched in natural reserves, ecological protection areas, scenic spots and drinking water source areas designated by the state or governments above the county level.
